Fun Faces

Some fun face sketches from photo reference. Yes, that's BB King on the left. I am going to see him in Boulder this coming April and am stoked! Been playing a couple of simple BB licks on the guitar - over and over - I'm sure my wife wants to punch me...

Old Man

Here's today's doodle.  I started out wanting to make his mouth creepy, although I didn't really follow through, so it ended up about halfway there.  3 hours start to finish, no reference again because i'm lazy.

Frankenstein!

Here's ol' frankie.  I was thematically inspired by the ones that Jim and Samson posted, although mine went a different route.  Maybe next time I'll try something a little more exaggerated and stylized.  Somewhere around 7 or 8 hours.

Angler-O-Lantern

A quick painting I did for this year's NetDevil company Halloween Party invite. It's supposed to imply an angler fish jack-o-lantern.

Painting A Night...Water Color

Ah speedpainting.... The goal is to do one of these a night. To be truthful some cheating has been going down, so as opposed to one hour per painting, it's been 2 or 3 over several nights. I tend to work on 3 or 4 at the same time so I don't get bored focusing on the same image. I'm working from picture on my computer monitor I took with my digital camera at various locations, except the one of Art Blakey, that's from a cd cover. Or, I'll do a color version of a sketchbook drawing. The important thing is to at the very least smear stuff around on paper while half dozing off at 10pm...

I combo-ed with kedhrin who made an environment for some scene setups.

Supes & Iron Man

A few more sketches of some comic book icons. Superman got a little too "Hayden Christiansen" and whiny, but I like how the Iron Man came out. - Armando

Conan the Barbarian

A quick sketch I did for some customer of the Comic Book store I frequent. More ink thrown down on top of some lead.

Red Sonja

Yeah.....she got a little manly on me. BUT I did this in about 40 minutes.

Green Lantern.

This is a quick sketch of one of my favorite comic book heroes. I roughed it out with some lead and finished it up with some pen and ink. - Armando

ZOMBIES VS COWBOYS!!!

Hi all, here's a thing I just finished. Zombies and Cowboys! I included a version with temp lettering just to give an indication of layout. I won't be handling that stuff in the end. Anyway thanks or looking -Ray

Also here's a time lapse video of my chaotic process of painting if you're interested:)

Thumbs

Here are a bunch of environment thumbnails. It seemed like I kept making the same environment over and over with the custom brush technique so I wanted to step back to the basics and make a bunch of simple b+w environment thumbnails that were different from each other. I feel it was a good experiment, I got diversity in the images, and I think i may have refined my understanding of light and form just a little bit more.

having life studies next to monster ideas is always fun. And, the demon got drawn over a horrible scribble some drunk local made in my book. (me)

been awhile.....

ahoy, here's a bit from my current sketchbook.... Figure drawing on public transit is a rough and tumble world, bumpy roads, and... People keep moving around, and whatnot. Wah, wah, wah.

IMC Final

It's been a while but I've been busy:) Here's the final barring any tweaks...

The illustration is from a design brief for a book called Green by Jay Lake that is due to be published soon by Tor books. Dan Dos Santos has the honor of illustrating the real cover and it's a beauty. I'm fortunate enough to have had some great input from Dan, Scott Fischer, Greg Manchess, Donato, Boris and Julie, and the rest of the IMC alumni of 2008. Thanks all! I could not have progressed as far as I did without your help and encouragement!

Mudbox WIP

I'm a little hesitant to post this, as I seem to have taken over the blog lately, but what the hell- Here's my latest mudbox doodle. Done over a few hours at a coffee shop. I'm thinking I will take this one a bit further into texture and detail than the last skull. I may end up doing some hair stuff in max as well if i stay motivated enough by this one.

Mudbox Skully

HaHA Samson! My turn to hog the blog.

Here's a lunchtime mudbox doodle. I should have looked at some skull reference before i started, but i didn't really plan this one out.

Also, a quick beauty render.
