For this one, i drew a few solid black silouhettes until I got one i liked. I then started building up black and white values from there until i liked how he looked in greyscale. After that I did a "color" layer to give him base colors. The next step was color picking from the image to paint a little more refinement. Finally I went in with the burning torch colors and added the light and highlights from that. He could definitely use more color variation and texture, I need to work that stuff into my process next.
Have you thought about useing a texture brush during your process. Maybe even lay the background with a texture before you start. Warming up the highlights and cooling down the shadow areas might help some too. I really dig the guy though, makes me miss my old mohawk.
